Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI v Olinda Vandals on Sun 09 May 2010 at 2pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report As we all know, the whole nation was gripped this weekend by two parties trying to resolve a closely fought contest where there was no clear result. After the previous two games had been tied on the last ball of the game, Richmond Legbreakers finally emerged victorious against Olinda Vandals who met their Waterloo on the playing fields of Kingston Grammar School.

RLB won the toss and elected to field first on a cold and gloomy afternoon. A combination of tight bowling from Mark Anderson and Tom Sapsed, and keen fielding from the rest of the team kept the Vandals score to below 25 off the first 8 overs. A conservative spell from the Southey Brothers and new recruit, Sahem, meant that at the half way stage, Vandals were labouring at 51-3, and then 83 with 10 overs to go. The two Marksmen returned and despite a hard hitting couple of overs from Dan Fenton (which was only ended when Phil K went monster raving loony and put his balls on the line for the club taking a catch in the deep mid wicket area), Vandals were bowled out for 134 in 38.5 overs.

Whether word got out about the quality of Gary's cheese and onion sandwiches or whether it was just too cold to stay outside, the queues outside the pavilion at tea time resembled the queues outside the polling stations on Thursday. Luckily however no one was turned away and this week, the rather large jam doughnut seemed to get everyones' vote rather than the greens.

With Jon Southey pleading for a lie down after his 8 over spell, Phil Killicoat was promoted to the top of the order. As Chelsea thumped 8 goals into the back of the Wigan net, Phil liberally thumped the ball around the ground as any concerns that his failure to make a net would make him rusty were quickly dispelled. He and Olly put on a opening stand of 62 off 15 overs before Olly holed out for 17 at cover point. Tom and Mark then watched from the other end before going cheaply to put the score at 73-3 at the half way stage. Sahem decided he wanted to get things moving along a bit, hitting a six in a quick fire 14 and teasing the wicket keeper, but then missed a straight one. 99-4. The exuberance of youth was then replaced with patience and wisdom with Trevor supporting Phil, until 3 runs short of the target, Phil was bowled for 83. There then followed a tense two overs as everyone imagined that we could snatch a tie from the jaws of victory, before Mark Southey hit the winning runs. Breakers win by 5 wickets!

Another great day's cricket and probably the best all round fielding display from the Breakers for a very long time. Well done guys.

Man of the match: Phil K for his 83, catch and bravery followed closely by Mark Southey with 5-21 which are his best bowling figures for the club.

Welcome and well done to Sahem who we hope to see more of later in the season after exam time.

I'll see the rest of you at Barnes hopefully.
