Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI v Broken Stumps on Sun 20 Jun 2010 at 2pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report Whilst Fabio Capello waits until two hours before the game to announce his team, I prefer to wait until two minutes before the start to know who is playing! A rather unfamiliar Breakers side took to the field on Sunday afternoon at Kingston Grammar school against The Broken Stumps. With both Captains aiming to make this year's game much closer than last year's, the result was that we lost our unbeaten record in a very close fought game.

Broken Stumps batted first with the openers putting on 26 for the first wicket before Steve Elder held a superb running catch at mid off. A couple of steady partnerships took the score to 97-2 but Will King and Trevor Brien then took a brace of wickets each to get the Breakers back in the game. 133-6 off 31 overs. An over from Phil Killicoat suggested that he might be an all-rounder and an over from Steve showed us how much the ball could spin on this wicket. With a couple of The Stumps being stumped and a first wicket for Chris Keith, The Broken Stumps were bowled out for 158.

158 off 35 overs is achievable and Jon S and Phil got us off to a good start before Phil chopped a wide one onto his stumps. 26-1 off 6 overs. Wickets tend to fall in pairs and Jon got a bugger of a ball to bring Will and Steve to the crease with the score on 29. Will seemed a bit out of sorts, probably down to too many of Gary's curry sandwiches at tea, and by the drinks interval, we were 71-3. Simon Knight was out shortly after, and with 10 overs to go we needed 8 an over. Steve Elder started to time the ball well and played some lovely shots. Supported by your skipper, we kept up with the run rate and the fifth wicket put on 61 before Steve was bowled for 43 trying to hit one over mid wicket. Mark and his magic bat came to the crease but word has got round about the invisible ball and Trevor was soon walking out with the score on 135-5 and two overs to go. 12 off the next over meant that any result was possible at the start of the 35th over. Your skipper was run out going for a second but Chris then hit a four to keep our hopes alive. Two off the fifth ball left us needing a six to win but it was not to be, the Breakers finishing on 153-6, five short.

A great game played in great spirit and thanks to the Broken Stumps for lending us a substitute fielder throughout our innings.

Man of the match: Steve Elder for his 43, great catch and bamboozling over.
Champagne moment: Simon Knight running 30 yards from long off to long on to take the catch of the match almost out of the hands of his son.

I hope to see Chris turn out again and bowl his big in swingers. In the meantime see you at The Vandals.
