Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI v Swingers on Sun 08 Aug 2010 at 1.30pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Won by 53 Runs
Match report
Now I like a Summer Pudding as much as the next person but quite how Gary had managed to prepare one for us to play on is anyone’s guess in a year when even the Lake District is in drought. The KGS 1st XI square was more reminiscent of the Barnes Wetland Centre and it was no surprise to see squadrons of Canada geese coming in to inspect it more closely throughout the day.
Still the sun was shining and I fancied that we had enough bowling strength in depth to defend even a below par score so I decided that RLB should bat. Dave Speight and Jon Southey waded out to the middle and it didn’t take long for the oppo bowlers to learn that bowling short on such a slow wicket was pointless with Dave in particular hammering several fours through square leg with panache. Charitably, they then over compensated with full tosses and Dave hammered them for more runs. Jon was also helping himself to runs and must have been disappointed to be out caught – he wouldn’t be the last though. This brought the skipper to the wicket determined to settle in, get the pace of the wicket and then help himself to some of the lovely pies that were now and again offered up but in the meantime, Dave slapped a square drive hard and low to cover point who surprised himself by holding on to it. Phil Killicoat was next in but before we could get a partnership going I hooked a long hop directly to square leg who at the last second stuck out a paw and caught it one handed. Phil soon started to get bat on ball and was joined by Bunny who unshackled from the usual constraints of opening flashed and flashed hard. Bunny flashed once too often and was caught however which brought Simon Burns to the crease and he and Phil added quick runs including some lovely drives. Phil made 32 and Simon 34 before both were ..... caught. The score cad suggests that the rest of the innings would seem to be less eventful but not so. Our latest recruit, Lachie Heysen, fresh off the steam boat from Adelaide, was just getting into the swing of things and had made an increasingly assured 14. He then took and completed a safe single before wandering out of his crease and was run out by a rather sly bit of fielding. I can only surmise that Lochie was perhaps distracted by one of the green parakeets that have colonised the area reminding him of a more simple life back home. Anyhow, that was the first wicket to fall by another means than being caught and Mark Southey being bowled was the only other in our innings. Scott Ciscon got us happily back on track giving a simple catch leaving William Stewart rueing a lost chance of a maiden 50. So 187 off 36 overs was short of what we should have totalled but I always felt that we had the firepower to defend the total.
Gary’s tea (the final one for RLB this season) was a cracker and only the absence of his celebrated Coronation Chicken sandwiches stops me from giving it full marks.
Suitably refreshed, we took to the field and opened up with the SaS – Simon and Scott. Both bowled with good pace and accuracy having watched, learned and inwardly digested the need to pitch the ball up. Simon was incredibly unlucky to have two consecutive catches spilled in the slips and it was all he could do to stop himself doing a Stuart Broad and hurling the ball at ...... Bunny. Scott took a simple caught and bowled, bowled their number 4 all ends up and induced a catch to Lochie H during his spell. These two were replaced by Mark Southey and Ben Burns, the former returning stats of 4 overs, 1 maiden and 2 wickets for the captain pleasing outlay of only 6 runs – top stuff indeed including another, sharper, catch by Lachie. As the junior partner of this particular duo, Ben laboured up the slope but still produced good pace that would have made the batsmen really hop on a quick track. His first victim was given out LBW by his umpiring brother for the second match in a row! With the wickets falling and the Swingers well behind the run rate, it seemed like a good time to introduce 2 new bowlers – Phil Killicoat and Lachlan Heysen; South Australian farm boys turned commodity futures analysts the pair and proud of it. Phil bowls leg spin and perhaps gave away how certain he was of his bowling by taking away his slip and posting 3 players on the boundary. In the event he was right to do so as the (left handed) Swingers captain was now well set and in no mood to hang around. A few runs came off his 3 overs but a wicket was taken with his last ball of his spell. At the other end Lachie bowled impressively on ‘dayboo’ and in training shoes and was unlucky not to take a wicket. The end was now in site and with the Swingers having been given a bit more leeway with a couple of loose overs from yours truly it was time to finish things off and a great throw by Phil resulted in a run out and Simon Burns took a well deserved and final wicket to wrap up another victory for Richmond Leg Breakers.
Special thanks to Dave Speight for taking on the ‘keepers role and doing so to a high standard, William Stewart for turning out at the last minute and showing good promise for the near future and Lachie who also answered the call late in the day and who I hope enjoyed himself enough to play for us again.
Champagne Moment – Phil Killicoat who decided not to go for a catch off my bowling but then gathered the ball and fired in a throw straight over the stumps to effect a run out.
Man of the Match - Dave Speight for top scoring and keeping very tidily.
Well done all
