Match report Breakers

If anything was disappointing yesterday, it was that Wimbledon could not produce a mens final to rival another epic contest between the Legbreakers and the Vandals.

For the first time in a while we had to release the twelfth man back to his county before the game (or at least his missus), and a very young looking side (ie 6 players under 40) took to the field on a windy but fine day after your skipper lost the toss yet again. With only one strike bowler, it was always going to be a long afternoon particularly as the Vandals have brought the boundary in on their ground this year to help them get bonus points in the league. 23-0 off 5 soon turned into 68-0 off 10 and then 137-0 by the drinks break. The outfield resembled Wembley (that used to be a complement!) and like the rock music playing all afternoon across the river in Shepperton, we thought their innings would never end. A cup of Robinsons barley water soon did the trick though and a fine catch by Dave Speight on the boundary off Chris Keith in the 22nd over put them on 144-1 exposing their very lengthy tail (or so we wished). At 223-1 in the 30th over, we thought we would be chasing 300, but once their other opener had gone caught behind off a snorter from Will, we did manage to peg them back with some accurate bowling from Mark and Tom and a few lucky bounces. As a result, the last 10 overs produced only 35 runs and we went into tea knowing that two boundaries an over would be sufficent to win us the game!

I might have been short of opening bowlers but I wasn't short of batsmen with 7 batsmen vying for the top 5 places in the order. Trying to learn from the mistakes of the England team this week against the Aussies, the instructions to Jon and Dave therefore were to build an innings and make sure they were still in after 10 overs. 5-0 off 5 became 33-0 off 10 overs, 63-0 off 15 and 98-0 at the drinks break. Both batsmen reached their fifties and although it always looked like Jon was going to die from exhaustion before either would be dismissed, Dave was run out for 57. Not surprisingly, Jon soon followed for 67 with Will not far behind. Steve Elder got a grass cutter and we were 153-4 off 29 overs. 106 to win off 11 overs. This brought Joe Tomlinson and Tom together at the crease, and probably a first for the club - two players batting together under the age of 23. Both played mature innings selecting their shots before Tom was caught for 14. 175-5 off 33. Enter out own Knight in shining whites to hit 28 off his first 6 balls, including two sixes, and suddenly we had a chance. Joe followed with 8 off the next 2 balls and soon it was 20 to win off three overs. Simon was runout, Joe caught behind, Chris LBW. 15 to win off 2, your skipper bowled, 10 to win off the last over and all hopes resting on Mark, his magic bat and the Angel at the other end. First ball 2, 8 to win. dot ball, dot ball. Still 8 to win off 3 balls. All the smart money was now going on it being a tie for the third time in four games between the two sides. Even the rock bands across the river seemed to know what was going on as 'Living on a prayer' blared out behind the trees. Mark hit the fourth ball to mid wicket, which was just about where Andy was, looking for a quick single. As we all know, Mark doesn't do quick or singles and the run out ended our innings, 7 short.

Yet again another great game guys, exciting, fun, and everyone involved.

Good to see the new faces getting involved and I hope that they all want some more.

Man of the match: So many deserve it this week. Have to give it to Dave Speight for his 57 and big catch on the boundary to get the break through in their innings. Fantastic batting from Jon and Simon and we mustn't forget Mark's bowling and his awesome figures of 3-17 off 8 overs in a total of 258!

Champagne moment: Simon's big over.

Interesting fact - we actually scored more runs off the bat than they did (238 vs 229).

See you all on tour.

Andy
