Odney CC v Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 22 Aug 2010 at 1.30pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Cricket Conference again came up trumps with the sourcing of Odney CC from Cookham in Berkshire, stepping in to the breech to replace the scheduled team.
August, with its flurry of christenings, holidays and weddings is always a tricky month to get the Breakers to muster, and so I turned to friends, family and villagers from Denham to finally produce a team worthy of a good performance.
The rain held off and the sky was grey but brightening at our second 'home' of Denham. The call I received from the groundsman 09.30am advised me that despite the heavy rain, the covers did not leak and so... game on.
Having won the toss, I put us into bat on a softish wicket which was still a tad damp. Our line up looked strong and I was confident that we could give this 'medium strong' side a run for their money. Indeed that is how we started. Dave Speight took up first strike and proceeded to continue striking up 101 runs. Great to see another centurion under our belt. With 19. 4's and a six, Dave produced some fine aggressive batting against quite a hostile opening attack.
So, there we were at 152 for 3...what could go wrong? Ok, so Will, unusually didnt trouble the scorers, but Mark A did what Mark does and knocked up a swift 48. A distinction to note here is that with the acoustics of the ground such as they are, every time Mark smacked one his 6. 4's and 2. 6's everyone who was not following the game dived for cover as they thought there was a sniper in the trees, such was the 'crack' from Marks blade!
Very swiftly, alas we were 188 for 7 but hey... 200 was in sight and a good target. With a bit of a wag from the tail thanks to Trevor and Harry's stand of 26, we stood at 214.
So Odney were a'strong medium', a league playing opener and two Berks yoof county players settled in very nicely, frustrating our attack throughout. Their opener played an impressive innings and remained undefeated. He was let off the hook a few times but we did chip away at his support with some exceptional fielding. Harry, Mandys son who plays Lacrosse as his main sport, was not afraid of anything round and hurtling at him at over 60mph (funny that) and would let nothing pass him. In particular we had a few sweet caught and bowled. Lachie, Trevor and Will's C&B's were impressive...they just stuck like glue - great reflexes for Will in particular. Lachie took a more leisurely approach thinking should I, should'nt I? Oh alright then - its mine... safe hands. With yer skip and Harry taking a catch each, the only time the woodwork was rattled was off Mark A with a played on.
In the penultimate over their opener reached the target... just another 10 runs we maybe..?
I hope we play this team again next year, they were very friendly and competitive and all of them stayed after the match for some pool, beer and chat.
Our thanks to Harry, Andy, Gordon and the young James for their first appearances, they will always be welcome in the future.
Man of the match... always got to be the centurion! Extremely well done Dave.
Next battle...Barnes a similar side to Odney? But this time not a similar result...I hope.
