DORSET TOUR - Earlswood Strollers v Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sat 16 Jul 2011 at 2pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs
Match report
After a delayed start, RLB took to the field in a 25 over 12 a side match at Milton Abbey School against fellow tourists Earlswood Strollers. With the Breakers starting two men down whilst Mark S fetched the tea and Will went back to the hotel to iron his shirt, Mark Anderson and Kamal did well to stay on their feet and were unlucky not to get an early breakthrough on the hardest wicket we are likely to play on this year. Burnsy replaced Mark at the Abbey end and probably bowled his best spell of the season, knocking the opener’s middle stump clean out of the ground and taking 1-13 in 4 overs. Kamal continued bowling tightly at the opposite end and removed the opener to finish with 1-12 off 5 overs. Scott who has obviously been watching the re-runs of the 1981 Ashes series that seem to be on every day at the moment, did his best Ian Botham impression, bowling loosely but effectively, and picked up 4 wickets for 13 runs including two wickets in 2 balls. Mark S put down his pinny for 20 minutes and with Trevor bowled out the remaining overs, Strollers ending up with 124 off 25 overs.
Ask Will and he will tell you that the wedding that was taking place around the boundary ensured that there was no more rain during the afternoon. Ask me and I’ll tell you that the associated short skirts were to prove too much of a distraction for the batsmen. Steve and Olly (fresh from resting up the night before) opened and with a strong batting side, we were confident that we would knock the runs off in good time. The Strollers did have a more than reasonable bowling attack however and after Steve was bowled for 1, only 20 runs were scored off the first 10 overs before Olly holed out for 18 trying to move things along. Kamal was next in so I moved my car to allow him to hit the ball down to cow corner. You can imagine my disappointment when he was caught in the covers for 0 (22-3). Will soon followed and at 26-4 in the 12th over it was clear that we had to play this like a 20/20 game rather than the 40 over game that we were playing at the moment. Mark A and Scott started to put a partnership together and some runs on the board, and there was a glimmer of hope that we might recover the position until Scott was run out by a spectacular piece of fielding that Strollers would not be able to pull off on their usual Council pitch.
56-5 in the 17th over and the run rate was now up to 10 an over. First ball I faced hit me on the pads and my attempts to fool the umpire with a quick seaside shuffle failed. 57-6. Burnsy had a good go but got caught behind for 5, Mark S was bowled for 1 to prove that his bat has now officially lost its magic (81-8), and the run rate went up to 12 an over. Jon hit a quickfire 8 but 103-9 was the best we could do in 25 overs with Mark A finishing unbeaten on 41.
Great bowling performances from Scott, Burnsy and Kamal and well done to Mark A for his unbeaten 41 and in the process passed 1000 runs for the Breakers.
Champagne moment: probably Jon S sliding under the covers before the match
