CYPOS v Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 03 Jul 2011 at 1.30pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Balls. A second defeat on the Jonathan Trott. Our original fixture against the Vandals went by the way due to a stag do rendering their team non-existent and with only 8 Breakers signed up by Thursday night, things were not looking good. In a similar situation several millennia ago perhaps I would have asked the Oracle at Delphi whether we should go ahead with the fixture or not, but this option is no longer available and in the end the Cricket Conference threw us up against CYPOS (a team which in itself sounds pleasingly ancient and Greek).
After all the variable weather we’ve been having it was great to turn up at Old Tiffs in shorts and a t-shirt with a view to slapping on the Hawaian Tropic. A quick look at the outfield and pitch however suggested that the groundsman also required slapping – if you have rain and sun you really do need to give a cricket pitch the odd mow now and again.
Despite this, on a Sunday afternoon friendly you always bat first whatever the situation and upon winning the toss that’s what RLB did. Only for 33 overs though. Jon S and Steve Z opened and it was obvious that whilst the pitch was not dangerous it was not going to play very true either. Get forward and play straight, young man. The openers both scored well off the bad balls and I’m informed by Statto that Jon passed 1000 career runs for RLB during his innings. I shan’t go into too much detail about our innings as 1. we lost and therefore there’s no need to dwell and 2. I’m trying to knock this out at work in under 5 minutes. All you really need to know is we were 51-0 then 70-1, reached the heights of 103-5 but subsided to 111 all out (pace Umpire David Shepherd up there in the pavilion in the sky). Special mention goes to Navin who was run out by the ‘keeper going for a wander after missing a hoik and also Ash who debuted for us and made a creditable 15 in his first game for a decade, I believe.
An early tea was taken. The fare was average to disappointing but we were only charged £35 so I guess you get what you pay for. I would have preferred some more adventurous sandwiches. It’s one of the reasons I play cricket, the prospect of adventurous sandwiches.
So 10 men took to the field determined to up our game and at least make CYPOS earn their win. Mark S took up station at one end and bowled through his 8 overs bowling as a good as spell as he can remember taking 3 wickets including a very good, nay, blinding catch by Steve behind the sticks. Jon S opened at the other end and bowled very tightly for 4 overs without luck before being replaced by Sunny who cranked up the pace and delivered a few very quick, menacing balls and took a wicket in the process. In between he swallowed a catch at long leg off Mark after a fine piece of field placing by the skipperoo. Interestingly, Sunny also has a few internet sourced blind dates coming up over the next few weeks, and I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing him luck with these desperate ladies..... Back on the field, a few catches were dropped and whilst we battled hard the game inched away from us. Overall, there was commendable spirit shown by all but in the end we were 30/40 runs short. However, the glimmer you can see at the end of the tunnel in this dark hour is the chance of revenge. This weekend we play CYPOS at home.
This week’s Victor Ludorum – Mark Southey; an inspired spell of bowling giving hope where there was despair, lightness where there was darkness and only 16 runs to the oppo. Bravo Victoria!
Salute
Will
