Denham v Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 27 May 2012 at 1pm
Richmond Leg Breakers Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
RLB restored their pride in glorious weather on Sunday with a 4 wicket win over Denham. Your skipper won the toss and decided to field first knowing that for this game at least he could give the new ball to a bowler named Anderson. Denham's openers adopted a positive approach before Mark got their first XI skipper to edge one behind with the score on 25. Scotty found his rhythm and using the old Tom Cartwright trick of bowling in sets (or so he says), inticed their No3 to have a go giving Sunny the opportunity to show how he can catch a ball high over his head and provide the first champagne moment of the season. 37-2. Kamal and Sunny came on after 10 overs to do the hardest stint of the afternoon but were ingloriously let down by the rest of the team who managed to drop 9 catches between them. 96-2 at drinks but it could have been such a different story. Trevor came on in the 22nd over to change the pace and with Phil Joyce, first slowed the run rate, and then starting picking up the wickets.134-2 very quickly became 142-5 before further wickets fell as the innings closed at 177-8. Trevor finished with 3-22 and Phil 3-24. Fine bowling to get them out for under 200. Fine catching would have got them out for under 150.
With Breaker's regular openers missing this week, the team sat down for tea knowing that the skipper's hand was going to land on someone's shoulder with a request to eat up and pad up. Like a true Knight, Simon rose to the challenge and for the first few deliveries looked the part before he got the invisible ball that found its way under the bat. 3-1 and Breakers cumulative score for the season at that point was 51-11. Time to show some True Grit and John Wayne would have been proud of Messrs Williams and Anderson as they hunkered down taking the score to 64-1 at drinks. Our very own cowboy took over umpiring duties from Mike, and Scott (and then Mark) soon wished for hawkeye and hotspot as the refreshed bowlers made a number of appeals for lbw.75-2 with Mark out lbw for 49 and giving the best Matt Prior impression in the changing room since Zangari's performance last year.
What can you say as skipper to Kamal when he comes out in a match situation like this? "The bowling's tight, they're seaming it a bit, we need over 5 an over. We can do this but remember we've not got loads of batting after us today?" No. Best to shut up and watch from the other end. Denham's first XI skipper steamed in, going for the kill. Dot ball (have a quick look Kamal), 4, 4 ,4 dot ball (have a rest) 2. 14 off the over and here we go. 100 came up in the 25th over and at 149-2 in the 33rd over, the match was looking like ours. Never good to get ahead of yourself. Kamal holed out to a pie thrower, Nav did the same, Joycey hit a 4 before being caught and Trevor soon followed. 175-6. 3 to win, 10 balls left. Frantic padding up on the boundary just in case. Luckily Jon Lieberman hit a 2 first ball. Scores level. Next ball into the sky and Breakers made it over the line whilst 3 fielders all left the catch for each other. Usual farce.
A great afternoon's cricket and another good run chase at Denham. A good team performance with honours and dropped catches shared out fairly evenlyand probably the slowest 50 ever in the club's history.
Look forward to the next game (if I can walk by then!)
